Three days before I began this journey to Bioneers, I realized there was a focused intent needed to get me there. With enough food to last the week for my love and our beautiful newborn daughter, and gas in the car I was faced with the need to purchase a ticket as well as create enough finacial food to fuel me throughout the weekend in San Francisco. So I sat with my vision book and began to craft my Bioneers experience.
Why did I need to go to this conference? What information did I hope to gain here, and why was it so important? Who was I to connect with and how would this assist me in my current ventures here in my own community?
My answers seemed simple, yet seeing them all on paper created the magical map that directed me throughout an amazing journey of changemakers dedicated to the conscious healing of our planet.
My list began with the intent to establish partnerships with conscious media networks, producers and funders to collaborate in the grounding and development of Lokahi Village and "Green Extreme" Community Makeover TV. These are two projects which have been in development over the last year of visioning for the benefit of the Hawaii Island Community, that serve to bring economic stability and community cohesion.
Now for many of you out there not familiar with the Bioneers Conference, this is a gathering at the junction of ecological restoration, human health, social justice, democracy and spirit to highlight holistic models of systemic change. A sort of Declaration of Interdependence, reflecting the wholeness of both the web of life and the interconnection of all the issues we face as a global civilization. Since 1990 the Bioneers movement has evolved far beyond the annual California conference, to a global movement interconnected to make the change. "As human beings, we have the remarkable capacity to reinvent our culture very rapidly. As Bioneers, we are cultivating an Earth-honoring culture that creates conditions conducive to life," says Janine Benyus Author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature.
This is my calling! I needed to bring the wisom of these elders and youth back to my island community.
i then pulled out the Bioneers year book from 2005, which listed the line up and participants for this years event, and listed all of the speakers I wanted to gather information from and where I wanted to focus my attention. Thom Hartman, Paul Hawken, Amy Goodman, Thomas Linzey. It seemed a bit overwhelming at first looking at all the information being presented and figuring out how to see it all.
Categories of interest included:
Ecological Design
Restoring our Ecosystem
Food & Farming
Ecological Medicine
Independent/Alternative Media
Nature, Culture & Spirit
Social & Environmental Activism
Economics/Social Entrpreneurship + Green Business
The Arts
Indigenous Knowledge
Women's Leadership and Youth Leadership.
So I continued to focus on the core. Connect with the youth initiatives. I ended the list in my vision book by listing foundations focused on projects and principles parallel to my mission and our projects. I then focused, opened my heart and said a prayer focusing my intentions as I closed the vision book. I knew that if the vision was strong and I held the belief and gratitude I would in fact be among my fellow Bioneers in San Francisco
on the 19th of October.
Scheduled departure to San Francisco Aloha airlines 6:35 p.m. Thursday October 19, 2006. I arrived at the airport in perfect Kona timing, about 30 minutes prior to departure. Clearly focused on the intention of gathering resources, I began my journey of collecting the pieces. As I entered the security area I was approached by a young cowgirl touting a laptop. She inquired about my association with a local development which one of my bags had it's name embroidered on its's side. A bit of small talk led me to the discovery that she worked on a project I had been pusuing for some time. I was able to get a bit more information regarding this 26,000+ acre land planning project as well as her past experience in reality tv production and media association. So, if I had any wuestion in my mind whether this trip would have significant results, I was convinced now. We exchanged contact information as well as some idras regarding both of our projects, went separate ways in Honolulu and I continued on this journey of Bioneering.
Northwest airlines from Honolulu to San Francisco to arrive at 6:15 am. I had three seats to myself, a godsend after a day of work and a full weekend ahead of me. I closed my eyes and began an exercise of magnetizing my intentions to me. Something I have recently acquired realizing I don't always have to go out and find everything, I can create it coming to me! The breathwork is the most important, filling my lungs with the sared HA breath and offering my cells rejuvination in every moment. Then I envision a large spiral emanating from my heart. Within this spiral, I place symbols or visions of the things in which I am calling into my world. Often these things consist of health, material objects, completion of projects etc. This night I focused on the meeting of individuals and foundations that would bring sustainability and social justice to my island community. The most important step, expressing my gratitude for everything in my life just as it is!
My arrival at the Four-Points Sheraton in Marin by way of the Marin Airporter and a taxi ride was a bit fuzzy as the change from Hawaii to San Francisco became more tangible. I hopped in the shower, met up with my amazing friend Doug, and we continued to the Marin Coonvention Center. Now at this time, I was still unclear as to how I would be gaining access to this event. I created enough finaces to make the trip possible and feed myself while I was here, yet I was still in search of a conference pass.
We arrived at the grounds situated around a beautiful lake park. Displays and vendors abound with tents set up for all of the plenary speakers and breakout sessions. A refurbished bread truck painted purple and orange stood out strong with the name "Peoples Grocery", and a beautiful mural of agricultural revolution. Next to it a large urban trash ruck with BIODIESEL "For Earth's Sake" Bannered on it;s side. I began snapping pictures instantly, and the Bioneering began.
Stay tuned for the details soon to come!
